Managing and Editing Videos in Google Photos

Google Photos lets you organize, trim, and lightly edit videos from your phone. Here's how to find, manage, and make quick edits to your video clips.

    1

    Find Your Videos

    ~24s
Open Google Photos. Tap the Search tab at the bottom of the screen and tap Videos — Google Photos automatically sorts your videos into a separate collection. Alternatively, you can scroll through the main Photos tab and look for the small video camera icon in the corner of thumbnails, which marks video clips.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can also search for videos by typing "videos" in the search bar at the top of the Search tab.

    2

Open a Video and Tap Edit

    ~15s
Tap any video to open it. Below the video, tap the Edit button (it looks like a slider or three horizontal lines). This opens the video editing tools.
    3

    Trim the Video

    ~29s
In the editor, you will see a timeline of your video at the bottom with handles at each end. Drag the left handle to the right to remove footage from the beginning. Drag the right handle to the left to cut the end. The section between the handles is what will be saved. Tap Save Copy when you are happy with the trim.

    Warning

Google Photos saves trimmed videos as a new copy, so your original full-length video is not deleted. You may want to delete the original manually to save storage space.

    4

    Adjust Brightness and Color

    ~15s
In the same Edit screen, look for adjustment options below the timeline. Tap Adjust to see sliders for brightness, contrast, and color. Drag the brightness slider to the right if your video looks too dark. Tap Save Copy when done.
    5

    Stabilize a Shaky Video

    ~16s
Tap the Stabilize option (it looks like a square with a circle inside) in the editing toolbar. Google Photos will process the video and reduce camera shake. This works best on clips that are slightly wobbly — very shaky footage may still look rough after stabilization.

Google Photos is a free app that automatically backs up your photos and videos to Google's cloud storage. It comes pre-installed on most Android phones and is available as a free download for iPhone. Once your videos are backed up, you can access them from any device, and you never have to worry about losing them if your phone is damaged or replaced.

In addition to storage and organization, Google Photos has a set of built-in tools for making light edits to your videos. You can trim the beginning or end of a clip to cut out unwanted footage, stabilize shaky video, adjust the brightness and color, and even rotate a clip that was recorded in the wrong orientation.

These editing tools are not designed for professional video production — for that you would want a dedicated app. But for trimming a clip, adjusting how bright it looks, or rotating it the right way, Google Photos handles the job well and saves your changes without needing to export the video to a separate file.

Google gives everyone 15 GB of free storage shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. If you record a lot of video, that storage can fill up, but you can always choose to back up in "Storage saver" quality (slightly compressed) to keep more videos at no extra cost.

If you have an older Android phone, Google Photos may already be managing your camera roll automatically. On iPhone, you need to download the app and turn on backup manually.
