Create a grocery list your whole family can update in real time from their own phones, so nothing gets forgotten at the store.

    1

Choose and download a grocery list app

    ~16s
Search for "OurGroceries" in the App Store or Google Play. Download it for free. Ask the other people in your household to download the same app on their phones. Everyone will need a free account — sign up with an email address and password.
    2

    Create a grocery list

    ~28s
Open OurGroceries and tap the plus icon to create a new list. Name it something clear, like "Weekly Groceries" or your last name plus "Groceries." You will land on the new empty list. Tap the input field at the top to start adding items. Type each item and tap Add — or tap Enter to add quickly and continue.

    Quick Tip

The app remembers items you have added before. After a few weeks, it will suggest items as you type, making it faster to rebuild a weekly list.

    3

Share the list with your household

    ~21s
Tap the Share icon (usually a person with a plus sign) next to your list name. Enter the email addresses of the people you want to share with — they must have an OurGroceries account with that email. They will receive an invitation to join your list. Once they accept, any change any of you makes is visible to everyone instantly.
    4

Check off items as you shop

    ~18s
At the store, open the app and tap any item to check it off. Checked items move to the bottom of the list and are shown in a lighter color so you can easily see what is left. If you put something back or change your mind, tap it again to uncheck it.
    5

Clear the list after shopping and start fresh next week

    ~15s
After you finish shopping, tap the menu button and choose "Remove Checked Items" to clear everything you bought. The app keeps a purchase history so you can quickly re-add common items next week without retyping them.

A shared digital grocery list solves a very common problem: one person heads to the store only to realize the rest of the family added things to the list after they left — or forgot to add things at all. With a shared grocery list app, everyone in the household can add, remove, and check off items in real time from their own phones.

When one person checks off "milk" at the store, it disappears from everyone else's list too. When someone at home realizes they need pasta, they add it and the person at the store sees it appear immediately.

The most popular shared grocery list apps in the United States include OurGroceries, AnyList, and Google Keep (which has a list feature). Amazon shopping lists and Apple Reminders also support sharing. All of the basic versions are free.

OurGroceries and AnyList are dedicated grocery apps — they organize items by category (produce, dairy, frozen, etc.), remember your most common items, and let you save favorite store layouts so the list is in the order you walk through the store. Google Keep is simpler but works well for people who already use Google.

The key step that makes these apps useful is sharing the list with other people in your household. This requires everyone to have the same app installed and an account. Sharing takes about two minutes once everyone has the app.

Quick Tip: Organize your list by aisle or store section. Both OurGroceries and AnyList can sort items by category automatically so you are not running back across the store for something you missed.
