How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Protect your home network from intruders and keep your family safe online.

    1

    Change your router password

    ~15s
Your router has a default admin password (often "admin" or "password"). Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and change the admin password to something strong.
    2

    Set a strong Wi-Fi password

    ~15s
Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption (not WEP — that is outdated and insecure). Create a Wi-Fi password that is at least 12 characters with mixed letters, numbers, and symbols.
    3

    Change the network name

    ~15s
Rename your Wi-Fi network to something that does not identify you personally. Avoid names like "SmithFamily" or "Apt302." Something generic like "HomeNet2024" is better.
    4

    Update router firmware

    ~15s
Check your router manufacturer's website or app for firmware updates. These fix security vulnerabilities. Most routers have an update option in their admin settings.
    5

    Create a guest network

    ~15s
Most modern routers let you create a separate guest network. Give visitors the guest password instead of your main network password. This keeps your devices isolated from guest devices.
    6

    Disable remote management

    ~15s
Unless you specifically need it, turn off remote management/access in your router settings. This prevents people from changing your router settings from outside your network.
