How to Use Windows Task Manager Like a Pro

Diagnose slow performance, find resource hogs, and force-close frozen apps.

    1

    Open Task Manager

    ~15s
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Or right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. This shows everything running on your computer.
    2

    End a frozen program

    ~15s
In the Processes tab, find the unresponsive app. Click it, then click End Task. This force-closes the program without restarting your computer.
    3

Find what is slowing you down

    ~15s
Click the CPU or Memory column headers to sort by usage. If one app is using 90% of CPU or memory, that is likely causing slowness.
    4

    Manage startup apps

    ~15s
Click the Startup Apps tab. Disable programs you don't need starting with your computer. This speeds up boot time significantly.
    5

    Monitor performance

    ~15s
Click the Performance tab for real-time graphs of CPU, memory, disk, and network usage. Useful for diagnosing whether you need more RAM or a faster drive.
