How to Turn On iCloud Advanced Data Protection

Encrypt almost all your iCloud data so only you can access it — not even Apple.

    1

    What it does

    ~15s
Advanced Data Protection encrypts the majority of your iCloud data — Backups, Photos, Notes, and more — with end-to-end encryption. Not even Apple can access your data.
    2

    Requirements

    ~15s
You need two-factor authentication enabled, a device passcode or password, and iOS 16.2 or later (current: iOS 18) or macOS Ventura 13.1 or later (current: macOS Sequoia 15). You must set up at least one recovery method first.
    3

    Set up recovery

    ~15s
Before enabling, set up either a Recovery Contact (trusted person who can help you regain access) or a Recovery Key (a 28-character code you store securely). This is essential — if you lose access, Apple cannot help.
    4

    Enable on iPhone/iPad

    ~15s
Settings > tap your name > iCloud > scroll down > Advanced Data Protection > Turn on Advanced Data Protection. Follow the prompts to verify your recovery methods.
    5

    Enable on Mac

    ~15s
Apple Menu > System Settings > click your name > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection > Turn On. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Important warning

    ~15s
If you lose all your devices AND your recovery method, your data is permanently lost — Apple has no way to decrypt it. Keep your recovery key in a very safe place.
