    How to Turn Your Mac On and Off

    Learn the proper way to start up and shut down your Mac for everyday use.

    Locate the power button

    On MacBooks, it's the Touch ID button in the top-right corner. On iMacs, it's on the back behind the lower-left corner.

    Turn on your Mac

    Press the power button once. The Apple logo will appear and macOS will start loading.

    Log in

    Click your user account and enter your password, or use Touch ID (fingerprint) to log in.

    Shut down properly

    Click the Apple menu (top-left) → Shut Down. Wait for the screen to go black.

    Use Sleep mode

    Close the MacBook lid or choose Apple menuSleep. Your Mac will wake instantly when you open it.
