How to Slow Down a YouTube Video for Easier Viewing

Sometimes YouTube videos move too fast. The host may talk quickly, the steps in a how-to video may go by before you can keep up, or you may want to study a craft project closely without missing a detail. The good news is YouTube has a built-in setting that lets you slow down any video to half speed, three-quarter speed, or anywhere in between. The video and the sound both slow down together, and the voices stay clear enough to understand.

This feature is helpful in many situations. If you are watching a knitting tutorial, slowing the video down to 75 percent speed gives you time to see exactly how the hands move. If you are learning a new computer skill, slowing it down to half speed lets you pause and follow each click. If a news anchor speaks too quickly, a small slowdown can make every word clear without making the voice sound strange.

You can also speed videos up if you want to get through a long lecture faster, but most folks find slowing down to be the most useful option. The setting is found behind a small gear icon on the video player. Once you change the speed, YouTube will use that speed for the rest of the current video. When you go to a new video, the speed goes back to normal unless you change it again.

Slowing down a video does not change the video for anyone else. And it does not affect the original. You are only changing how it plays on your screen.
