How to Undo Sending a Text on iPhone

Sent a text to the wrong person or with a typo? Your iPhone gives you two minutes to take it back. Here is the plain way to undo a sent text.

Open Messages and Find the Message You Sent

Tap the green Messages icon on your home screen. Find the conversation where you sent the message you want to fix. Tap that conversation to open it. Scroll to the bottom if needed. The message you just sent will be on the right side of the screen in a blue bubble. If the bubble is green, this feature will not work because green bubbles are regular SMS, not iMessage.

You only have two minutes to unsend, so do not stop to do anything else. Open Messages right away.

Press and Hold the Message Bubble

Place your finger on the blue message bubble and hold it down for about one second. A small menu will pop up over the bubble with options like Reply, Copy, Translate, and at the very bottom of the menu, two options labeled "Undo Send" and "Edit." If you do not see Undo Send and Edit at the bottom of the menu, the two-minute window has already passed, or the message was sent as a green bubble SMS.

Quick Tip

If you have trouble pressing and holding because of arthritis or shaky hands, turn on Haptic Touch in Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Haptic Touch, and set the duration to "Slow." That gives you more time before the menu pops up.

Tap Undo Send to Pull the Message Back

Tap "Undo Send" at the bottom of the menu. The blue message bubble will disappear from your conversation. A small gray note will appear in its place that says "You unsent a message." The other person sees the same note on their end, telling them you unsent something. They cannot see what the original message said. The unsend is final, so make sure you really want it gone before you tap.

Warning

If the other person already read the message before you unsent it, they may remember what it said. Unsend hides the message but cannot erase a memory.

Or Tap Edit to Fix a Typo

If you only want to fix a typo or change a word, tap "Edit" instead of "Undo Send." The message bubble opens up so you can change the words. Type the correction and tap the blue checkmark to save. The fixed message appears with a small "Edited" label below it. The recipient can tap that label to see the original version, so be aware they will know you made a change. You have fifteen minutes to edit a message after sending. And you can edit the same message up to five times.

Quick Tip

Use Edit for small typo fixes and Undo Send for messages you wish you had never sent. They are different tools for different problems.

Make Sure Your iPhone Has iOS 16 or Newer (iOS 18 is current in 2026)

If the Undo Send and Edit options never appear, your iPhone may be running an older version of iOS. Go to Settings, General, Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install. The feature requires iOS 17 or newer on both your phone and the recipient's phone. If the recipient is on an older iPhone, your message goes through but they will see the original text even if you unsend on your end.

Quick Tip

Most iPhones from the iPhone 8 forward can run iOS 17 or newer. If your phone is older than the iPhone 8, you may need to upgrade to use this feature.

Everyone has done it. You finish typing a text, tap send, and a half-second later you see the typo, or worse, you realize the message went to the wrong person in your contacts. For decades, there was no way to take that back. Once a text was sent, it was gone. Apple changed this in iOS 16, which came out in late 2022. If both you and the person you texted are using an iPhone with iOS 17 or newer (iOS 18 is the current 2026 release, so this covers almost everyone), you have two full minutes to unsend a message after you tap send. You can also edit a typo in a sent message for fifteen minutes after sending. This feature has saved a lot of marriages and avoided a lot of awkward family group chat moments.

The feature only works for iMessages, which are the texts that show up in blue bubbles. It does not work for green bubble texts, which are regular SMS messages sent to Android phones. The reason is that iMessage runs through Apple's servers, so Apple can pull the message back before it shows up. Regular SMS goes through your phone carrier, and once the carrier delivers it, there is no way to take it back. If you see green bubbles in your conversation, the unsend button will not appear.

When you unsend a message, the recipient sees a small note that says "You unsent a message." They cannot see what the original message said. They only know that you sent something and then took it back. This is a small price to pay for being able to fix mistakes. The same is true for edits: when you edit a message, the recipient sees the corrected version with a small "Edited" tag. And they can tap that tag to see the original if they are curious. So an edit is more visible than an unsend, but neither one is invisible.

The two-minute window is strict. After two minutes pass, the unsend option disappears and the message stays in place. The fifteen-minute edit window is also strict. The lesson is to act fast. The moment you see your typo or the wrong recipient, do not panic, but do move quickly. Open the Messages app, find the message, and follow the steps below. With a little practice, you will fix your mistakes before the other person even has time to read the original.
