Sleep gets harder as we get older, and many people over 60 find themselves waking up tired even after a full night in bed. One of the most helpful tools for building a steady sleep routine is already on your iPhone. It is called the Sleep feature (sometimes still referred to as Bedtime). And it lives inside the Health app and the Clock app. It can remind you when to start winding down, dim your screen at night, and wake you with a gentle sound in the morning.
The science behind the feature is straightforward. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps your body settle into a rhythm. People who keep a regular sleep schedule tend to fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested. The iPhone Sleep feature does the work of remembering for you.
When you set up your sleep schedule, the iPhone turns on a Sleep Focus mode. This silences calls and notifications during your sleep hours so a late-night text does not wake you up. Important calls from your favorites list can still come through if you choose. The screen dims to a quiet lock screen showing only the time, and your iPhone gently reminds you to start winding down at a time you choose, usually 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
In the morning, your alarm wakes you with a soft sound that gradually grows louder, which is much kinder than a sudden buzz. After you wake, the Health app shows a chart of how long you slept each night.
If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, the feature also tracks your sleep stages, including deep sleep and REM. You do not need a watch to use the feature, but it adds more detail. Setting all this up takes about five minutes and can be adjusted any time.
