How to Find Anything on Your Mac Using Spotlight Search

Spotlight lets you find any file, app, email, or web result on your Mac in seconds — just press Command+Space and start typing.

    1

    Open Spotlight

    ~21s
Press the Command key (⌘, the key with the Apple logo or a clover symbol) and the Spacebar at the same time. A search bar appears in the center of your screen. Start typing immediately — results appear as you type.

    Quick Tip

You can also click the small magnifying glass icon (🔍) in the top right corner of your Mac's menu bar to open Spotlight.

    2

    Search for files and apps

    ~21s
Type the name of any file, document, app, or folder. Results appear instantly and are grouped by type (Applications, Documents, Folders, etc.). Use the arrow keys to move through results and see a preview on the right side. Press Enter to open the selected item. This is the fastest way to open any app — faster than navigating the Dock or Applications folder.
    3

    Do calculations and conversions

    ~17s
Spotlight doubles as a calculator and unit converter. Type a math problem: "45 x 7" and see the answer immediately. Type a conversion: "72 fahrenheit in celsius" or "5 miles in kilometers" or "20 dollars in euros." The answer appears right in the search bar without opening any app.
    4

    Search for words within documents

    ~18s
If you can't remember a file's name but remember a word in it, type that word in Spotlight. It searches inside documents, emails, and notes for the word. This is especially useful for finding old emails — type a distinctive word from the email and Spotlight will locate it across all your email accounts.
