Wake Siri by pressing the side button

    ~34s
On most iPhones released after 2017 (iPhone X and newer), press and hold the side button — the button on the right edge of the phone. Hold it for about two seconds until you hear a chime and see a colored glow at the bottom of the screen. That means Siri is listening. Speak your request clearly, then let go of the button. On older iPhones with a Home button at the bottom (iPhone 8 and earlier), press and hold that Home button instead.

    Quick Tip

You do not need to speak loudly. A normal conversational voice works fine. Siri handles accents and regional speech well.

    2

Turn on "Hey Siri" to use Siri hands-free

    ~55s
If you want to wake Siri without touching your phone at all, you can enable the "Hey Siri" feature. Open the Settings app (the gray icon with gears). Scroll down and tap Siri. Look for the option that says "Listen for" and tap it, then choose "Hey Siri" or "Siri" depending on your iOS version. Follow the short setup prompts — your phone will ask you to say a few phrases so it can learn your voice. Once set up, you can say "Hey Siri" from across the room and it will wake up and listen.

    Quick Tip

If your phone responds to "Hey Siri" when you did not mean to activate it — for example, during a TV show — you can turn this feature off by going to SettingsSiri and switching the "Listen for" setting to "Off".

    Warning

The "Hey Siri" feature works only when your iPhone is plugged in or when Low Power Mode is off. If the battery is very low, Siri may not respond to your voice until you plug in.

    3

    Try 15 helpful Siri requests

    ~42s
Wake Siri using either method above, then try any of these requests spoken naturally: "Call Dr. Smith," "Set a timer for 10 minutes," "What's the weather this weekend?", "Text my daughter I love her," "Turn on the flashlight," "What song is playing?", "Remind me to take my pills at 9 AM," "Open my camera," "Read my notifications," "Add bread to my shopping list," "Get directions home," "Set an alarm for 6:30 AM," "Translate good morning into French," "Play country music," or "How far away is Denver?" Siri understands natural phrasing — you do not need to memorize special wording.

    Quick Tip

If Siri misunderstands you, a transcript of what it heard appears on screen. You can tap the microphone icon to try again, or tap in the text box and type your request instead.

    4

    Change Siri's voice

    ~44s
Siri comes with several different voices to choose from, including different accents and both male and female options. To change the voice: open SettingsSiriSiri Voice. You will see a list of options grouped by accent (American, Australian, British, Indian, Irish, South African). Tap any option to hear a preview. Tap the one you prefer to select it. Your iPhone will download the new voice in the background — this takes less than a minute on a Wi-Fi connection. There is no right or wrong choice. Pick whichever voice feels most comfortable to listen to.

    Quick Tip

If you find Siri's voice too fast or hard to follow, you can also adjust your phone's overall speaking rate. Go to SettingsAccessibilitySpoken ContentSpeaking Rate and drag the slider to slow down spoken audio across all apps.

    5

Turn off "Hey Siri" if your phone is responding accidentally

    ~37s
If your phone keeps activating Siri during conversations or while watching TV, the "Hey Siri" feature is picking up sounds that resemble its wake phrase. To stop this: open SettingsSiri. Tap "Listen for" and change it to "Off." You can still use Siri by pressing and holding the side button whenever you need it. You will not lose any Siri features, only the always-on listening. If you want to completely disable Siri, you can also turn off the "Press Side Button for Siri" toggle on that same screen.

    Quick Tip

Many people keep the button-press method on and turn off always-listening. This way you have full control over when Siri activates.

    6

Troubleshoot if Siri is not responding

    ~50s
If Siri is not working, try these steps in order. First, check that your volume is turned up — press the volume-up button on the left side of your phone. Second, check that Siri is turned on in SettingsSiri. Third, check that your microphone is not blocked — remove any protective case covering the microphone openings (small holes at the bottom edge and top of the phone). Fourth, restart your iPhone by pressing and holding the side button and a volume button together, then sliding to power off. Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. If none of these steps work, visit Apple Support at support.apple.com for additional help.

    Warning

If you share your iPhone with family members or grandchildren, note that any voice Siri recognizes can trigger it. If you have sensitive information in your notifications or messages, consider turning off "Hey Siri" so the phone does not read messages aloud when others are nearby.

Siri is a voice assistant built into every iPhone. Instead of typing or tapping, you can speak out loud and Siri will answer questions, make phone calls, send text messages, set reminders, give you directions, and much more — all without you touching your phone.

This guide explains how to wake Siri up, what you can ask it, and how to adjust a few settings to make it work the way you want.

What Siri can do for you

Siri is particularly helpful if you find small text hard to read, if your hands are busy, or if typing on a phone screen feels uncomfortable. You speak naturally — you do not need to memorize exact commands. Siri understands everyday language.

Here are 15 things you can ask Siri right now:

    1. 1**"Call Mom"** — Siri dials the contact from your phone book. If you have more than one number for that person, Siri will ask which one.
    2. 2**"Set a timer for 20 minutes"** — Siri starts a countdown right away. Helpful when you are cooking or doing laundry.
    3. 3**"Text Sarah: I'll be there at 3"** — Siri writes and sends a text message for you. It will read the message back and ask you to confirm before sending.
    4. 4**"Get directions to Walgreens"** — Siri opens Apple Maps and shows you the nearest location with turn-by-turn directions.
    5. 5**"What's the weather tomorrow?"** — Siri gives you the forecast for your location.
    6. 6**"Set an alarm for 7 AM"** — Siri creates an alarm in your Clock app.
    7. 7**"Play relaxing music"** — Siri plays music through Apple Music, Spotify, or whichever music app you use.
    8. 8**"What is the capital of France?"** — Siri searches the internet and reads the answer aloud.
    9. 9**"Open the Photos app"** — Siri opens any app on your phone by name.
    10. 10**"Read my notifications"** — Siri reads your unread alerts aloud so you do not have to look at the screen.
    11. 11**"Turn on the flashlight"** — Siri activates the light on the back of your iPhone instantly.
    12. 12**"What song is this?"** — Hold your phone near music that is playing and Siri identifies the song and artist.
    13. 13**"Remind me to take my medication at 8 PM"** — Siri sets a timed reminder in your Reminders app.
    14. 14**"How do you say thank you in Spanish?"** — Siri translates words and phrases into dozens of languages.
    15. 15**"Add milk to my shopping list"** — Siri adds items to your Reminders or shopping list app.

    A note on privacy

Siri processes your voice on your device as much as possible. Apple does not store your voice recordings by default. You can review Apple's privacy policy at apple.com/privacy. If you prefer not to use Siri at all, you can turn it off completely — see Step 5 below.

    Before you start

Make sure your iPhone is running a current version of iOS. Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update to check. Siri works best with a reliable Wi-Fi or cell signal when answering questions from the internet, though basic tasks like timers and alarms work without any connection.
