A smart bathroom scale looks like a regular scale. But it sends your weight to an app on your phone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. That means you do not have to write numbers down on paper. The scale remembers each reading and shows your progress on a chart. Many smart scales also estimate body fat percentage, BMI, and water weight, though those extra numbers should be treated as rough guides, not medical readings. Before your first weigh-in, place the scale on a hard, flat floor. Carpet and rugs can throw off the numbers. Install the four AAA batteries that came in the box, or charge it if it has a built-in battery. Download the app the manufacturer recommends, such as Withings Health Mate, Fitbit, Renpho, or Eufy Life. Create an account using your email address, then enter your height, age, and sex so the app can calculate BMI correctly. Pair the scale by tapping a setup button in the app and stepping on the scale when it asks. Once paired, weigh yourself at the same time each day, ideally in the morning before breakfast and after using the bathroom. Wear the same amount of clothing each time so your comparison is fair. Stand still with bare feet on the metal pads until the number stops blinking. The reading then flows into the app over the next minute. Over time, you will see a line graph showing weeks and months of progress. Talk with your doctor before changing your diet or exercise based on these numbers, especially if you take heart, blood pressure, or diabetes medication. A smart scale is a helpful tool. But it does not replace medical advice from a real clinician.
