    1

Open Freeform on your iPhone or iPad

    ~21s
Swipe down from the center of your home screen and type "Freeform" in the search bar. Tap the app to open it. If you don't see it, go to the App Store and download Freeform for free — it's made by Apple.

    Quick Tip

Freeform requires iOS 16.2 or later. Go to Settings > General > Software Update if you need to update first.

    2

    Create a new board

    ~15s
Tap the pencil-and-paper icon in the top-right corner to start a new blank board. Your board opens as an infinite canvas. Give it a name by tapping "New Board" at the top and typing something descriptive.
    3

    Add text, shapes, and images

    ~21s
Tap the toolbar along the bottom of the screen. The "T" button adds a text box. The shapes icon adds circles, rectangles, arrows, and more. The photo icon lets you pull in a photo from your library. Tap and drag any item to move it around the canvas.

    Quick Tip

Double-tap a shape to add text inside it — handy for labels and callouts.

    4

    Invite someone to collaborate

    ~15s
Tap the person-plus icon at the top right. Choose how you want to share the invite — via Messages, Mail, or a link. The other person will get a notification, and once they open it, they can edit the board alongside you in real time.
    5

    Save and find your boards

    ~18s
Boards save automatically to iCloud. Press the back arrow to return to the main list where all your boards are stored. Tap and hold any board thumbnail to rename, duplicate, or delete it.

    Quick Tip

Your Freeform boards also appear on Mac if you're signed in to the same Apple ID and have iCloud turned on.

Freeform is a free app that comes built into every iPhone and iPad running iOS 16 or later. Think of it as a giant digital whiteboard where you can write notes, draw diagrams, stick photos, and add shapes — all in one place. It's great for planning a trip, organizing your thoughts before a big decision, or just brainstorming with someone else over the internet.

When you first open Freeform, you get a blank white canvas with no edges. You can place things anywhere — text boxes, sticky notes, hand-drawn sketches, and images. Zoom in and out by pinching the screen, just like you would on a photo.

One of the most useful features is collaboration. You can share your Freeform board with a family member or friend via iMessage or email. Once they accept, both of you can see each other's changes in real time. This makes it perfect for planning events together even when you're in different locations.

If you have an Apple Pencil, Freeform really shines — you can draw and write naturally on the screen. But even without a stylus, you can type, add images from your photo library, and use your finger to sketch rough shapes.

Freeform boards are saved automatically in iCloud, so your content stays safe and shows up on all your Apple devices. Boards you haven't touched in a while are listed in the main view, and you can rename or delete them at any time.
