How to Create and Use a LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is the professional social network. Here is how to set up a profile and start connecting.

    1

    Create your profile

    ~15s
Go to linkedin.com and click "Join now." Enter your email, create a password, and fill in your name and location. LinkedIn will ask for your current job title and company — enter them even if you are retired (you can say "Retired from [Industry]").
    2

    Add a professional photo

    ~15s
Upload a clear headshot where your face is visible. It does not need to be professionally taken — a well-lit photo from your phone works fine. Profiles with photos get 21 times more views than those without.
    3

    Write your headline and summary

    ~15s
Your headline appears right below your name. Make it descriptive: "Retired Teacher | Community Volunteer | Lifelong Learner" works well. In the About section, write 2-3 sentences about your background and interests.
    4

    Connect with people you know

    ~15s
LinkedIn will suggest people from your email contacts. Send connection requests to people you know: former colleagues, friends, family. When sending a request, always include a short personal note: "Hi John, it has been a while! Would love to stay connected."
    5

    Use LinkedIn safely

    ~15s
Be cautious of unsolicited messages offering jobs or business deals — scams exist on LinkedIn too. Never share your Social Security number, bank details, or pay money to a "recruiter." Legitimate recruiters and companies will never ask for payment.
