How to Stay Safe on TikTok

TikTok can be fun and informative, but it needs some privacy settings to stay safe.

    1

    Set your account to private

    ~17s
Open TikTok > tap Profile (bottom right) > tap the three lines (top right) > Settings and Privacy > Privacy. Turn on "Private Account." Only people you approve as followers can see your videos. This is especially important for anyone who does not want strangers viewing their content.
    2

Control who can interact with you

    ~15s
In Settings > Privacy: set "Who can comment on your videos" to "Friends" or "No one." Set "Who can send you direct messages" to "Friends" or "No one." Set "Who can duet/stitch with your videos" to "Friends." This prevents unwanted contact from strangers.
    3

    Be careful what you share

    ~15s
Never share: your home address or neighborhood landmarks, your daily routine or schedule, financial information, personal identification details. Even with a private account, approved followers can screenshot or screen-record your videos.

    Manage your For You page

    ~23s
The "For You" page shows videos TikTok thinks you will like. If you see something inappropriate: press and hold the video > "Not interested." If you see potential misinformation: tap Share > Report. Use Screen Time settings to limit how long you spend scrolling.

    Quick Tip

TikTok has a "Restricted Mode" in Settings > Content Preferences that filters out potentially mature content. Turn it on if you want a family-friendly experience.
