How to Use YouTube: Find, Watch, and Subscribe

YouTube has a video for almost everything. Here is how to find what you need and make the most of it.

    1

    Search for videos

    ~15s
Go to youtube.com in your browser or open the YouTube app. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) and type what you want to learn or watch. For example: "how to connect WiFi" or "easy dinner recipes." Press Enter or tap Search.
    2

    Watch a video

    ~15s
Tap any video thumbnail to start watching. Use the controls at the bottom: play/pause, skip forward/back, and adjust volume. Tap the fullscreen icon (square in the corner) to watch in full screen. Tap anywhere on the video to show/hide controls.
    3

    Subscribe to channels you like

    ~19s
If you find a creator whose videos you enjoy, tap the "Subscribe" button below the video. Subscribed channels will appear in your "Subscriptions" tab, making it easy to find their new videos. Subscribing is free.

    Quick Tip

Some great YouTube channels for tech beginners: "Kevin Stratvert" for Windows, "9to5Mac" for Apple, and "AARP" for senior-focused tech tutorials.

    4

    Adjust playback speed and captions

    ~15s
Tap the gear icon on a video for settings. "Playback speed" lets you slow down (0.75x) or speed up (1.25x) the video. "Captions" turns on subtitles — extremely helpful if the speaker talks fast or has an accent.
