How to Customize the Mac Dock for Easier Access

The Mac Dock is the row of icons at the bottom of the screen. You can resize it, add your favorite apps, remove ones you never use, and position it on any side of the screen.

    1

Make the Dock icons larger (easier to see)

    ~39s
Go to the Apple menuSystem SettingsDesktop & Dock (or System PreferencesDock on older Macs). The "Size" slider controls how large the Dock icons appear. Drag it to the right to make icons larger. "Magnification" makes icons grow even larger when you hover your mouse over them — drag the magnification slider to set how large they get. For users who have trouble seeing small icons, increasing both size and magnification is the most helpful adjustment.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can also resize the Dock directly by hovering your mouse over the divider line on the right side of the Dock until the cursor becomes a resize arrow, then drag up or down to resize.

    2

Add your most-used apps to the Dock

    ~26s
To add an app to the Dock: open the app first. While it is running, right-click its icon in the DockOptions → "Keep in Dock." The app stays in the Dock even after you close it. Alternatively, find the app in your Applications folder (click the smiley-face Finder iconApplications) and drag the app icon to any position in the Dock. Apps can also be dragged from Launchpad (the rocket ship icon) into the Dock.
    3

Remove apps you never use from the Dock

    ~34s
To remove an app from the Dock: right-click the icon → Options → "Remove from Dock." Or simply drag the icon away from the Dock and hold it for a second — a "Remove" badge appears and the icon disappears when you let go (with a satisfying poof). This does not uninstall the app — it just removes the shortcut from the Dock. The app is still in your Applications folder.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: A clean Dock with only 8-12 of your most-used apps is much easier to navigate than a crowded Dock with 30 icons. Remove anything you haven't clicked in a month.

    4

Move the Dock to the left or right side of the screen

    ~31s
If you find the Dock at the bottom gets in the way, or if you prefer it on the side: go to System SettingsDesktop & Dock → "Position on screen" → choose Left, Bottom, or Right. Some people prefer the left side because it frees up vertical screen space. Try each position to see what feels natural. You can also enable "Automatically hide and show the Dock" — the Dock hides until you move your mouse to the edge of the screen, giving you more working space.
