Search for files, apps, and content

Percentage calculations work too — try "15% of 84" for a quick tip calculation at a restaurant.

    ~19s
Go to System Settings > Siri & Spotlight > Spotlight. Uncheck any categories you don't want included in search results (like Fonts or Developer) to keep results focused on what matters to you.

Use the Privacy tab to exclude specific folders — useful if you have large folders of archived files you rarely need to search.

Spotlight is one of the most useful tools built into every Mac, and most people only scratch the surface of what it can do. Pressing Command+Space opens a small search bar in the middle of your screen — from there, you can do far more than find a file.

The most common use is launching apps. Instead of hunting through the Dock or Applications folder, press Command+Space, type the first few letters of any app name (like "Saf" for Safari or "Cal" for Calendar), and press Enter. It opens instantly. This is one of the fastest ways to get around your Mac.

Spotlight also searches your entire computer — files, folders, emails, contacts, calendar events, messages, notes, and even content inside documents. If you remember writing something in a PDF last year but can't find the file, type a phrase from it and Spotlight will surface it.

One feature that surprises people: Spotlight works as a calculator. Type "127 * 4" and you'll see the answer immediately without opening a calculator app. It handles basic math, percentages, and even complex formulas.

Unit and currency conversions work the same way. Type "10 miles in km" or "32 Fahrenheit in Celsius" and the conversion appears instantly. Type "100 USD in EUR" for a quick currency estimate (using current rates if you're connected to the internet).

Need to look up a word? Type "define grateful" and Spotlight shows the dictionary definition right in the search panel. No app required.

When you search for a file, look to the right side of the Spotlight window — that's the preview panel. It shows the contents of documents, images, and PDFs without opening them, saving you time when scanning results.

To control what Spotlight searches, go to System Settings > Siri & Spotlight > Spotlight Privacy. You can exclude specific folders (like a large external drive) to speed up searches, or uncheck categories you never use (like Fonts or Developer content) to reduce clutter in results.

Quick Tip: Press Command+Space and type a website name — Spotlight will offer to open it in Safari without going to the browser first.
