    1

Check if you have macOS Sequoia

    ~31s
Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and choose "About This Mac." The macOS name and version number will appear near the top. If it says "macOS Sequoia," you are all set. If it says an older name (like Ventura or Sonoma), go to System Settings > General > Software Update to see if Sequoia is available for your Mac.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Back up your Mac with Time Machine before installing a major update — so you can go back if anything goes wrong. Use an external hard drive or Time Capsule.

    2

    Try iPhone Mirroring

    ~19s
Open the Spotlight search (Command + Space) and type "iPhone Mirroring" to find the app. Open it, make sure your iPhone is nearby with iOS 18 installed, and follow the on-screen steps to approve the connection. Your iPhone screen will then appear as a window on your Mac. See the dedicated iPhone Mirroring guide for full details.
    3

    Use the new Passwords app

    ~26s
Open your Applications folder (click Finder > Applications) and look for the "Passwords" app — it has a key icon. Open it and use your Mac login password or Touch ID to get in. You will see all the passwords your Mac has saved over time — organized by website or app. You can search for a specific one, tap to reveal the password, or add a new entry manually. This app syncs with your iPhone's Passwords too.
    4

    Try window tiling

    ~27s
Open two apps side by side — for example, Safari and Mail. Slowly drag one window to the left or right edge of your screen and hold it there for a moment. The window will snap to fill exactly half the screen. Do the same with the second window on the other side. This is called "tiling" and helps when you want to look at two things at once. You can also hold the green fullscreen button on a window to see tiling options.

    Explore Apple Intelligence (if available)

    ~31s
Apple Intelligence requires a Mac with an Apple Silicon chip (M1 or later) and a system language set to English (US). If you have a compatible Mac, go to System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri to see what is available. Features include writing suggestions in Mail and Notes, a smarter Siri, and the ability to summarize long emails or documents. These features are being added in stages throughout 2025.

    Warning

Apple Intelligence features are only available on Macs with M1, M2, M3, or M4 chips. Older Intel-based Macs that run Sequoia will not have these AI features.

macOS Sequoia is Apple's major Mac software update released in September 2024. If your Mac is reasonably current, you may have already installed it — or been asked to. This guide explains what is actually new, why it matters, and how to start using the best new features.

macOS Sequoia works on Macs from 2019 and later (for most models). To check which macOS version you have, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose "About This Mac." If it says "macOS Sequoia," you are on the latest major version. You can check for smaller updates under System Settings > General > Software Update.

The biggest new feature is iPhone Mirroring — the ability to see and control your iPhone screen directly on your Mac. This is covered in its own guide, but briefly: as long as your iPhone is nearby and running iOS 18, you can open the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac and use your iPhone entirely from your computer.

The second major addition is a dedicated Passwords app. Before Sequoia, your saved passwords were buried inside System Settings. Now there is a standalone app called Passwords where you can view, search, and manage all your saved usernames, passwords, and passkeys in one clean interface.

Window tiling is another practical addition — your Mac can now automatically snap windows into neat arrangements on your screen, similar to a feature Windows has had for years. And Apple Intelligence — Apple's new set of AI features — debuts in Sequoia for Macs with Apple Silicon chips (M1, M2, M3, and later).
