Smart displays like the Google Nest Hub Max and Amazon Echo Show have built-in cameras and screens for hands-free video calling. They are especially useful in the kitchen or living room, and for family members who find phones difficult.

Google Nest Hub Max uses Google Meet for calls. Open the Google Home app → tap your Nest Hub Max → set up calling. You can call anyone with Google Meet or Google Contacts. Say "Hey Google, call Mom" or "Hey Google, call [phone number]." The camera and screen activate automatically.

Amazon Echo Show uses Alexa calling. Open the Alexa app → Communication → sync your contacts. Say "Alexa, call Grandma" (she needs an Echo or Alexa app). For video calls, both parties need a device with a camera. You can also make regular phone calls to any U.S. phone number.

Both devices support "Drop In" — authorized family members can connect instantly like an intercom. The display chimes before connecting. This is popular for checking in on elderly family members. Both parties must agree to enable this feature.

For privacy, both devices have a physical camera cover or switch. Slide it closed or press the button to physically disable the camera when you want privacy.
