How to Manage Your Notification Settings

Take control of your phone's notifications — silence the noisy apps and keep the ones that matter.

    1

    Open notification settings

    ~15s
iPhone: SettingsNotifications. Android: SettingsNotifications or Apps & Notifications.
    2

    Review each app

    ~15s
Go through the list and decide which apps should notify you. Keep essentials (calls, texts, banking) and turn off noisy apps.
    3

    Customize instead of turning off

    ~15s
For some apps, turn off "Sounds" but keep "Banners" for silent visual notifications.
    4

    Set up Do Not Disturb

    ~15s
Schedule quiet hours for bedtime. iPhone: FocusDo Not Disturb. Android: SettingsDo Not Disturb.
    5

    Review periodically

    ~15s
Check your notification shade weekly. If an app sends too many notifications, go to settings and turn them off.

Phone notifications can be overwhelming — constant buzzing from news apps, social media, games, and shopping apps. The good news is you have complete control over which apps can notify you and how.

On iPhone: go to Settings → Notifications. You see a list of every app. Tap any app to control it: turn notifications on or off entirely, choose whether they appear on the lock screen, in the notification center, or as banners, and choose whether they make a sound. For apps that are too noisy, turn off "Sounds" but keep "Banners" so you still see them silently.

On Android: go to Settings → Notifications (or Apps & Notifications). Tap an app to manage its notification channels. Android lets you control different types of notifications within the same app separately.

A good approach: keep notifications on for calls, texts, email, calendar, and banking alerts. Turn off notifications for social media, news, games, and shopping apps — check those on your own schedule instead.

Both iPhone and Android offer "Do Not Disturb" and "Focus" modes that silence all notifications during set times (like bedtime or meetings). iPhone: Control Center → Focus → Do Not Disturb. Android: Settings → Do Not Disturb.

For a quick cleanup, check your notification history: iPhone swipe down from the top; Android swipe down. Notice which apps are sending the most notifications and turn those off.
