Download Mercari and Set Up Your Profile

    ~23s
Install the Mercari app from the App Store or Google Play, or access it at mercari.com. Sign up with your email address, Google account, or Apple ID. Complete your profile with your name and a profile photo — buyers are more likely to purchase from sellers with complete, professional-looking profiles. Add your bank account information from the start so you can transfer earnings without delay later.
    2

Create a Listing in Under Five Minutes

    ~35s
Tap the "Sell" button and take at least three to four photos of the item — front, back, close-up of any branding, and any areas with wear. Write a clear title (like "Blue Levi's 501 Jeans, Size 32x32, Excellent Condition") and a description that includes the brand, size, condition, and any notable features or flaws. Select the appropriate category from the dropdown menu so buyers searching that category can find your item.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The title is the most important part of your listing for search visibility. Include the brand name, product name, and key descriptive words like color and size, all in the title field.

Set a Price and Choose Shipping Options

    ~23s
Research comparable listings by searching for similar items before settling on a price. Mercari will estimate the shipping cost based on the item's category and your location. You can choose to pay shipping yourself (which often attracts more buyers) or pass the cost to the buyer. If you select "Mercari Prepaid Label," Mercari generates a label at checkout that covers shipping based on the weight you enter.

Ship the Item After a Sale

    ~35s
When your item sells, you will receive a notification with a prepaid shipping label attached. Print the label, pack the item securely in a box or padded envelope, affix the label, and drop it at the carrier location showed on the label (USPS, UPS, or FedEx depending on the label type). You must ship within three business days to maintain your seller rating. Enter the tracking number in the app once you have dropped it off.

    Warning

Never ship items purchased off-platform or after someone messages you asking to complete the sale outside of Mercari. These requests are almost always scams. Mercari's protections only apply to sales completed through the app.

Get Paid After the Buyer Confirms

    ~30s
After the buyer receives the item and rates the transaction, your earnings appear in your Mercari balance. If the buyer does not rate within three days of confirmed delivery, Mercari automatically releases your funds. Transfer the balance to your bank account from the "Balance" section of your profile. Standard transfers are free (two to three business days). Instant Pay transfers cost $2 and arrive within minutes.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Respond quickly to any questions buyers send before a sale closes — prompt, friendly responses increase the chance someone follows through on a purchase.

Mercari is a general-purpose resale marketplace where you can sell almost any physical item — clothing, electronics, video games, toys, kitchenware, collectibles, books, and much more. Unlike Poshmark (which focuses on fashion) or Depop (which leans toward vintage clothing), Mercari is closer to a digital yard sale where nearly any category is welcome.

The platform is designed to make selling as quick as possible. You photograph an item, fill in a title and description, set a price, and your listing goes live in minutes. When a sale is made, Mercari generates a prepaid shipping label for you to print, which makes packing and dropping off at a carrier location the only remaining task.

What makes Mercari stand out for sellers is the payout speed. Once a buyer confirms the item was received and rates the transaction, your earnings become available almost right away. Mercari also has a feature called "Instant Pay" that can deposit funds to your bank account within minutes for a small fee, or you can transfer for free within a few business days.

Mercari charges sellers a 10 percent selling fee on each completed transaction, plus a payment processing fee. This is a simpler fee structure than some competing platforms. Buyers can also make offers below the asking price, and sellers can set their listings to "Smart Pricing," which automatically adjusts the price downward over time to encourage a sale.

The platform has protections for both buyers and sellers. Buyers can rate a transaction and request a return within three days of delivery if an item does not match the listing. Sellers are also rated, and high-rated sellers tend to make more sales. For anyone who has a pile of items taking up space and wants to turn them into cash without a garage sale, Mercari is one of the fastest and most flexible options available.
