How to Deposit a Check with Your Phone

Take a photo of a paper check with your banking app to deposit it into your account without driving to the bank — safe, fast, and free.

    1

    Download your bank's official app

    ~16s
Search for your bank's name in the App Store or Google Play Store and download the official app. Look for the bank's official logo and make sure it has many reviews to confirm it is the real app. Log in with your online banking username and password.
    2

Sign the back of the check

    ~15s
Before photographing the check, flip it over and sign your name on the back in the endorsement area. Some banks require you to also write "For Mobile Deposit Only" under your signature — check your app's instructions.
    3

Find the deposit feature in the app

    ~15s
Open the banking app and look for a button or menu option labeled "Deposit," "Mobile Deposit," or "Deposit a Check." This is usually found in the main menu or at the bottom navigation bar.
    4

Photograph the front and back of the check

    ~17s
The app will guide you to take two photos: one of the front and one of the back of the check. Hold the check flat against a dark background and make sure all four corners are visible in the frame. The app may capture the image automatically.
    5

    Confirm the amount and submit

    ~15s
The app will ask you to confirm or enter the check amount. Review the information, select which account to deposit into, and tap "Submit." Keep the physical check in a safe place for 2–3 weeks in case any questions arise, then shred it.

Mobile check deposit lets you deposit a paper check into your bank account by taking two photos with your phone — one of the front of the check and one of the back. The banking app on your phone sends those photos to your bank, which processes the deposit the same way it would if you walked into the branch. Most major banks offer this feature for free through their official app.

Before you deposit a check this way, you need to sign the back of the check — this is called endorsing it. Some banks also ask you to write "For Mobile Deposit Only" beneath your signature. Check your bank's app for specific instructions, as requirements vary.

Funds from a mobile deposit usually become available within one business day, though your bank may hold part of the amount for a few extra days if the check is large or from an unfamiliar account.
