    Download Moovit

    ~15s
Search for "Moovit" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and install the free app. Open it and allow location access when prompted — the app needs to know where you are to give accurate transit directions. You can use Moovit without creating an account.
    2

    Search for a transit route

    ~26s
Tap the magnifying glass or the "Get Directions" button on the home screen. Enter your starting point (or tap "My Location" to use your current position) and your destination. Tap the bus or train icon to filter for transit directions specifically. Moovit will display multiple route options with estimated travel times.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap "Options" before searching if you want to filter out routes that require more than one transfer or avoid routes that include very long walks.

    3

Choose your route and start navigation

    ~18s
Review the route options Moovit suggests. Each one shows total travel time, number of transfers, walking distance, and the specific bus or train lines involved. Tap the route that works best for you, then tap "Go" to start turn-by-turn navigation. Moovit will guide you to the stop and tell you when to board.
    4

Use the "Get off here" alert

    ~33s
Once you are on the bus or train, Moovit tracks your position along the route. The app will send a vibration alert and a push notification when you are one or two stops away from your destination. This feature works even if your phone screen is off. You can adjust how early the alert fires by tapping the settings icon in the navigation screen.

    Warning

The "Get off here" alert requires your location to be active throughout your ride. If you turn off location services or the app closes, the alert will not fire. Keep the app running in the background during your journey.

    5

Check real-time arrivals for a specific stop

    ~24s
If you are already at a stop and want to know when the next bus or train arrives, tap "Lines Near Me" on the Moovit home screen. Moovit will show transit vehicles currently operating near you with real-time arrival estimates. This is helpful for casual use when you do not need full turn-by-turn directions.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Save your home, work, or frequently visited locations in Moovit for faster access to common routes.

Moovit is a public transit navigation app that gives you step-by-step directions for getting around cities using buses, subways, trains, and light rail. It is available in more than 3,500 cities across 112 countries and works particularly well in the United States, Europe, and other regions with established transit networks.

The app shows you multiple route options for any trip, including how long each option takes, how many transfers are required, and how far you will need to walk between stops. Moovit pulls data from official transit agencies and updates in real time, so it reflects actual bus and train positions and any service disruptions affecting your route.

One of Moovit's best features for newcomers to public transit is the "Get off here" alert. The app monitors your location as you ride and sends you a notification when you are approaching your stop so you know when to stand up and exit. This is especially helpful in unfamiliar cities where you cannot read the station names or where buses do not always announce stops clearly.

Moovit also shows scheduled arrival times alongside real-time tracking when the transit agency supports it. This means you can see on your screen whether the next bus is on time or running five minutes late, rather than guessing at the stop.

The app is free to download and use. It does not require any setup beyond allowing location access. You do not need to create an account for basic navigation, though creating one lets you save favorite stops and routes.
