Every home needs working smoke detectors and — if you have any gas appliances, an attached garage, or a wood-burning fireplace — carbon monoxide detectors. The Nest Protect combines both in a single unit and adds two features a basic hardware-store detector cannot match: a friendly spoken pre-alert before the loud siren, and a phone notification if something is detected while you're away.
The pre-alert is worth explaining because it meaningfully changes how smoke detectors feel in daily life. Most detectors have one mode — silent or blaring. Nest Protect has a middle state. If it senses smoke in the kitchen (burned toast, oven smoking), a calm voice says "There's smoke in the kitchen" at a normal volume, giving you a moment to wave a dishtowel before it escalates to the full alarm. This alone drastically reduces the number of false-alarm midnight panic moments with ladders and batteries.
The Nest Protect also runs Sound Check — once a month, at a time you choose, it briefly tests its horn at a low volume so you know the siren works. Compare that to a basic detector that you only know works when it chirps at 3 AM with a dying battery.
Two versions exist: battery-powered (6-year AA lithium battery life) and wired (connects to household power with battery backup). Choose battery if you're replacing an existing battery unit, wired if you have existing wired detectors. Both need to be replaced after 10 years — the sensors degrade and no detector past that age is fully trustworthy.
