Philips Hue is the most popular smart light bulb system in the world. You screw Hue bulbs into your existing light fixtures, connect them to a small hub that plugs into your router, and then control your lights from a phone app.
With Hue lights, you can turn lights on or off from anywhere, set schedules so lights automatically turn on at sunset and off at bedtime, dim lights to any level, and — if you choose color bulbs — change the color to anything you want.
Smart lighting is especially useful for home security (lights that turn on when you're away make it look like someone is home), for people with mobility challenges (turn off downstairs lights from bed), and for setting the right mood for reading, watching TV, or relaxing.
Hue bulbs come in several types: White (dim and brighten), White Ambiance (adjust from warm yellow to cool daylight white), and White and Color Ambiance (full color control). White bulbs start around $15 each; color bulbs are $40-$50 each.
To get started, you need a Hue Starter Kit, which includes a Bridge (the hub) and two or three bulbs. The Bridge plugs into your router with an included cable. After the initial setup, you can add more individual bulbs purchased separately.
Hue works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit, so you can also control your lights with voice commands.
