How to Start Your Own Podcast

Record, edit, and publish your own podcast with minimal equipment and free tools.

    1

    Plan your podcast

    ~15s
Choose a topic you're passionate about and can discuss regularly. Pick a format: solo, interview, co-hosted, or storytelling. Plan your first 5 episodes. Choose a name that's descriptive and searchable.
    2

    Equipment you need

    ~15s
Minimum: a USB microphone ($50-100, Samson Q2U or Audio-Technica ATR2100x recommended) and headphones. Free software: Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net). Your phone can record in a pinch using Voice Memos.
    3

    Recording tips

    ~15s
Record in a quiet room. Closets with clothes make great recording booths (clothes absorb echo). Speak 4-6 inches from the microphone. Do a test recording and listen back before your real episode.
    4

    Edit your episode

    ~15s
Open your recording in Audacity (free). Cut out long pauses, mistakes, and ums. Add intro music (use royalty-free music from YouTube Audio Library or Pixabay). Export as MP3 at 128 kbps.
    5

    Choose a hosting platform

    ~15s
Spotify for Podcasters (free): hosts unlimited episodes, distributes to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more. Buzzsprout ($12/month): more analytics and features. Anchor (now Spotify) is the easiest to start.
    6

    Publish and distribute

    ~15s
Upload your episode to your host. Write a title and description (include keywords people search for). Your host submits your podcast to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Amazon Music.
    7

    Grow your audience

    ~15s
Share episodes on social media. Ask listeners to subscribe and leave reviews. Be consistent — publish on the same day each week. Collaborate with other podcasters. It takes time to build an audience.
