How to Print from a Chromebook

Print documents, emails, and web pages from your Chromebook using Google Cloud Print alternatives and direct wireless printer connections.

    1

Make sure the printer is on and connected to Wi-Fi

    ~17s
Turn on your printer and confirm it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromebook. Most printers show a Wi-Fi symbol on their display when connected. Check your printer's manual or display screen for its network setup option if you are not sure.
    2

    Open the print dialog

    ~15s
On any page, document, or email you want to print, press Ctrl + P on your keyboard (hold the Ctrl key and press P). A print preview window will appear.
    3

    Select your printer

    ~15s
In the print dialog, look for a dropdown menu labeled "Destination" or "Printer." Click it and look for your printer's name in the list. If it does not appear, click "See more" to scan the network.
    4

Add the printer manually if needed

    ~15s
If your printer still does not show up, click the clock in the bottom-right corner, then the gear icon, and go to "Advanced" then "Printing" then "Printers." Click "Add Printer" and follow the on-screen steps.
    5

    Print your document

    ~15s
Once your printer is selected in the print dialog, check the number of copies and click the blue "Print" button. The document will send to your printer within a few seconds.

Printing from a Chromebook works a little differently than printing from a Windows PC. Chromebooks do not use the same driver software that Windows uses to talk to printers. Instead, Chrome OS looks for printers that are connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromebook, or printers that support a standard called IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) — which most printers made after 2017 do support automatically.

If your printer is on the same Wi-Fi network, your Chromebook will often find it on its own when you try to print. Brands like HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother all have compatible wireless printers that work well with Chromebooks. If your printer is older or connected by USB, Chrome OS can still detect it when you plug in the cable.

Once your printer is set up once, it remembers the connection for future print jobs.
