How to Use Uber or a Taxi App for the First Time

Book a safe, reliable taxi from your phone without cash — step by step for complete beginners.

Download the app and create an account

Search "Uber" in the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) and install it. Open Uber and tap "Create Account." Enter your name, email, and a phone number — Uber will send a text code to verify it. You'll also need to add a payment method (debit or credit card).

Uber works with most debit cards. You can also pay with PayPal if you prefer not to enter your card details.

Set your destination

On the home screen, tap "Where to?" and type your destination — a zip code, address, or landmark (e.g. "Royal Victoria Hospital" or "Manchester Piccadilly Station"). Uber will show you the estimated fare before you book, so there are no surprises.

Choose your ride type and confirm

Uber offers different car types. "UberX" is a standard car and usually the cheapest. "Comfort" is a newer, larger car. "Assist" has drivers trained to help passengers with mobility needs. Select one and tap "Request." The price is shown upfront and doesn't change if the journey takes longer.

The app shows the driver's name, car model, color, and number plate before they arrive. Match these exactly before getting in.

Track your driver and stay safe

After booking, you can watch your driver approaching on the map in real time. The app shows their estimated arrival time. When they arrive, confirm their name and check the car color and plate before getting in. You can also share your trip with a trusted contact — tap "Share status" in the app.

Rating and payment

Payment is automatic — your saved card is charged when the trip ends and you'll get a receipt by email. After the trip, you'll be asked to rate your driver 1-5 stars. This takes 10 seconds and helps keep the service quality high. If anything goes wrong, contact Uber support through the app's "Help" section.
