How to Set Up Your Roomba Robot Vacuum

A Roomba handles vacuuming on its own — once you set it up, you can start cleaning with a tap on your phone.

    1

Place the charging dock and charge the Roomba

    ~23s
Find a location along a wall with at least 1.5 feet of clear space on each side and 4 feet of clear space in front of the dock. Plug the dock into a wall outlet. Place the Roomba on the dock and leave it to charge fully — the light on the Roomba will stop flashing and stay solid when charging is complete, which takes 2–3 hours.
    2

    Download the iRobot Home app

    ~15s
Search for "iRobot Home" in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the free app. Create a free account with your email address. The app is where you will control the Roomba, view cleaning maps, and set up schedules.
    3

    Connect your Roomba to Wi-Fi

    ~27s
In the iRobot Home app, tap the plus (+) button to add a new robot. Follow the on-screen instructions — you will be asked to hold a button on the Roomba to put it in setup mode, then connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. Have your Wi-Fi password ready. The process takes about 5 minutes.

    Quick Tip

Roombas connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks. If your router broadcasts both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with different names, connect to the 2.4GHz one during setup.

    4

    Run your first cleaning cycle

    ~18s
Tap "Clean" in the iRobot Home app. The Roomba will leave its dock and begin cleaning the room. On the first few runs, it maps the area — after 3–5 cleaning sessions, a complete floor plan of your home will appear in the app, and you can direct it to specific rooms.
    5

    Schedule automatic cleanings

    ~16s
Tap the Schedule section in the app to set the days and times you want the Roomba to run automatically. Many people schedule it for a weekday morning so it finishes before they wake up. The Roomba will run on schedule even if you are not home.
    6

Empty the dustbin after every run

    ~24s
Press the button on top of the Roomba to open the dustbin compartment. Pull out the bin and empty it into a trash can. For households with pets, the dustbin fills quickly — you may need to empty it mid-run on the first few uses. Rinse the dustbin with water monthly and let it dry completely before reinserting.

    Warning

Never place the dustbin back while still wet — moisture damages the internal filter.

A Roomba is a robot vacuum that navigates your floors automatically, cleaning as it goes and returning to its charging base when the job is done. Once set up, you can start a cleaning cycle by tapping a button in an app on your phone, schedule cleanings for specific days and times, and even see a map of which areas the robot cleaned.

Getting started begins with unboxing and placing the charging dock. The dock is a small base station that the Roomba returns to when it needs to recharge. Place it against a wall with a few feet of clear space on either side so the Roomba can find it easily. Plug the dock into a wall outlet. Set the Roomba on the dock and let it charge fully before the first run — this typically takes about two to three hours.

While it charges, download the iRobot Home app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Create a free account and follow the in-app steps to add your Roomba. You will connect it to your home Wi-Fi network during this process — have your Wi-Fi password ready. The app will guide you through pressing the right buttons on the Roomba to complete pairing.

Once connected, tap "Clean" in the app to start your first cleaning run. The Roomba will move around the room in a systematic pattern, mapping the area as it goes. Most Wi-Fi connected Roombas build a floor map after a few runs — this lets you see which areas were cleaned and send the robot to specific rooms on demand.

The dustbin inside the Roomba needs to be emptied regularly — most models need it after every one or two cleaning sessions. Open the top of the Roomba, pull out the dustbin, and empty it into a trash can. Some newer models have a self-emptying base that handles this automatically.

If the Roomba gets stuck on a rug fringe, power cord, or under low furniture, the app will notify you. Clearing the area before each run prevents most stuck situations. Tips for better cleaning: pick up small items from the floor, tuck away loose cables, and make sure doors to areas you do not want cleaned are closed.
