A Roomba is a robot vacuum that navigates your floors automatically, cleaning as it goes and returning to its charging base when the job is done. Once set up, you can start a cleaning cycle by tapping a button in an app on your phone, schedule cleanings for specific days and times, and even see a map of which areas the robot cleaned.
Getting started begins with unboxing and placing the charging dock. The dock is a small base station that the Roomba returns to when it needs to recharge. Place it against a wall with a few feet of clear space on either side so the Roomba can find it easily. Plug the dock into a wall outlet. Set the Roomba on the dock and let it charge fully before the first run — this typically takes about two to three hours.
While it charges, download the iRobot Home app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Create a free account and follow the in-app steps to add your Roomba. You will connect it to your home Wi-Fi network during this process — have your Wi-Fi password ready. The app will guide you through pressing the right buttons on the Roomba to complete pairing.
Once connected, tap "Clean" in the app to start your first cleaning run. The Roomba will move around the room in a systematic pattern, mapping the area as it goes. Most Wi-Fi connected Roombas build a floor map after a few runs — this lets you see which areas were cleaned and send the robot to specific rooms on demand.
The dustbin inside the Roomba needs to be emptied regularly — most models need it after every one or two cleaning sessions. Open the top of the Roomba, pull out the dustbin, and empty it into a trash can. Some newer models have a self-emptying base that handles this automatically.
If the Roomba gets stuck on a rug fringe, power cord, or under low furniture, the app will notify you. Clearing the area before each run prevents most stuck situations. Tips for better cleaning: pick up small items from the floor, tuck away loose cables, and make sure doors to areas you do not want cleaned are closed.
