Gmail is Google's free email service used by over a billion people worldwide. It is reliable, has excellent spam filtering, and works on any device — computer, phone, or tablet. If you do not have an email address yet, Gmail is a great place to start.
To create a Gmail account, go to gmail.com and click "Create account." You will choose your email address (something like yourname@gmail.com), create a password, and enter basic information like your name and date of birth. Choose an email address that is professional and straightforward to remember — your first and last name is a good option. If the address you want is taken, try adding a middle initial or a number.
Once your account is created, you can access Gmail at gmail.com in any web browser, or through the Gmail app on your phone (pre-installed on Android, available free on iPhone).
The Gmail inbox organizes your email into tabs: Primary (important emails), Social (social media notifications), and Promotions (marketing emails and deals). You can switch between tabs by tapping them at the top.
To send an email, tap the "Compose" button (a pencil icon or the word "Compose"). Enter the recipient's email address in the "To" field, type a subject line, write your message, and tap the send button (a paper airplane icon). You can add attachments (photos, documents) by tapping the paperclip icon.
To reply to an email, open the message and tap "Reply" at the bottom. Type your response and tap send. "Reply All" sends your reply to everyone who was included in the original email — use this carefully.
Gmail automatically filters spam (junk email) into a separate folder. Check your Spam folder occasionally — sometimes legitimate emails end up there by mistake. If you find one, tap "Not spam" to move it to your inbox.
You can organize emails by starring important ones (tap the star next to any email), archiving emails you have dealt with (swipe right to archive), or using labels to categorize them. The search bar at the top is powerful — you can search by sender, subject, date, or any word in the email body.
