How to Share Photos with Family Using Shared Albums

Create a shared photo album so the whole family can add and view photos from their own devices.

    1

Create a shared album in Google Photos (works on any device)

    ~18s
Open the Google Photos app (free on iPhone and Android). Tap "Library" at the bottom, then "+" to create a new album. Give it a name like "Family 2026." Tap the three dots in the top right corner and choose "Share album" to invite family members by email.
    2

Create a shared album in iCloud (for iPhone users)

    ~16s
Open the Photos app on iPhone. Tap the "+" icon in the Albums tab and choose "New Shared Album." Name it and enter the email addresses of the people you want to invite. Invited people will get a notification to join.
    3

Add photos to the shared album

    ~15s
To add a photo, tap and hold it in your photo library to select it. Tap the share icon and choose the shared album from the list. The photo will appear in the album for all members to see.
    4

Let family members contribute their own photos

    ~15s
When setting up the shared album, make sure "Subscribers can post" is turned on. Family members who accept the invitation can then add their own photos and videos directly to the same album.
    5

View and download photos from the album

    ~17s
Family members can open the shared album at any time to view all photos. They can tap any photo and use the download icon to save it to their own device. This way, everyone has copies of family moments without having to text each photo individually.

Shared photo albums let your whole family add photos to one place so everyone can see them, regardless of whether they use iPhone or Android. This is much easier than texting individual photos and avoids the issue of photos getting lost in chat threads. Both Apple's iCloud Shared Albums and Google Photos shared albums work well and are free to use.
