Check that your home is compatible

    ~35s
Before buying, check that your heating and cooling system is compatible with the thermostat you want. The easiest way: look at your current thermostat and count the wires connected to it. Most homes work fine, but some older systems or systems without a "C wire" (common wire) may need an adapter. Both Nest and Ecobee websites have compatibility checkers — enter information about your system and they will tell you if it works.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit in the box that can substitute for a C wire if your system does not have one. This makes Ecobee a popular choice for older homes.

    2

Install the thermostat (or hire someone)

    ~33s
Turn off power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker before touching any wires. Remove your old thermostat from the wall — take a photo of the wires and which labels they connect to before disconnecting anything. Connect the same wires to the matching labels on the new smart thermostat's base plate. Attach the display and restore power. Both Nest and Ecobee include detailed installation guides and video walkthroughs on their websites.

    Warning

Always turn off the power at the breaker before touching thermostat wires. Low-voltage wiring is not typically dangerous, but touching wires with power on can damage the new thermostat.

    3

Connect to Wi-Fi and create an account

    ~20s
After installation, the thermostat display will walk you through setup. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to your home Wi-Fi network. You will enter your Wi-Fi password using the thermostat's display controls. Then download the Nest app (by Google) or the Ecobee app and create a free account. Sign in to see your thermostat in the app.
    4

    Set a temperature schedule

    ~18s
In the app, tap your thermostat and look for a Schedule section. You can set different temperatures for different times of day: a comfortable temperature when you are home, a lower (or higher in summer) temperature when everyone is away, and a different overnight temperature. Once set, the thermostat follows this schedule automatically every day.
    5

Adjust temperature remotely from your phone

    ~20s
Open the Nest or Ecobee app at any time to see the current temperature and adjust it. Tap the temperature to change it — drag up to increase heat, drag down to lower it. Changes happen within minutes as your HVAC system responds. You can also see energy usage reports in the app to understand your savings over time.

A smart thermostat replaces your existing wall thermostat and connects to your home's Wi-Fi. Once connected, you can adjust the temperature from your phone, set schedules, and let the thermostat learn your habits to save energy automatically.

The two most popular smart thermostat brands are Google Nest and Ecobee. Both are available at Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, and Amazon, and typically cost between $100 and $250.

Here is what makes them "smart":

Remote control: You can raise or lower the temperature from your phone no matter where you are. Heading home early? Turn the heat on before you arrive. Going on vacation? Drop the temperature to save energy while away.

Scheduling: Set the temperature to automatically change throughout the day. Lower the heat at night when you are sleeping. Raise it in the morning before you wake up. Let it drop during work hours. Once the schedule is set, you never have to touch the thermostat again.

Learning (Nest specifically): The Nest Learning Thermostat watches your manual adjustments for a week or two and then builds a schedule automatically based on your patterns. Over time it gets better at predicting what you want.

Energy reports: Both Nest and Ecobee send you monthly reports showing how much energy you used and how the smart thermostat helped you save compared to a standard thermostat. The EPA estimates smart thermostats save 10 to 15 percent on heating and cooling bills.

Important: Installing a smart thermostat involves connecting it to your home's heating and cooling system wires. If you are not comfortable with basic DIY tasks, a licensed HVAC technician or electrician can install it for you — typically for $50 to $150 in labor.
