How to Listen to Spotify Without an Internet Connection

Spotify Premium lets you download playlists, albums, and podcasts to your phone so you can listen offline — perfect for commutes, travel, or areas with poor signal.

    1

    Confirm you have Spotify Premium

    ~15s
Offline downloads require Premium. To check your plan, open Spotify → tap your profile photo → "Spotify Free" or "Premium" will appear. To upgrade, go to spotify.com/premium or tap "Get Premium" in the app.
    2

    Download a playlist or album

    ~22s
Find a playlist or album you want to save. On its page, you will see a download toggle switch at the top — it looks like a down arrow with a circle around it. Toggle it ON (it turns green). Spotify will start downloading all the songs.

    Quick Tip

Download over Wi-Fi to avoid using mobile data. Spotify can use quite a bit of data for large playlists.

    3

    Download a podcast

    ~15s
Open any podcast you follow. Tap an individual episode, then tap the download icon (↓). To download episodes automatically, tap the podcast's name → the download settings icon → choose to auto-download new episodes.
    4

    Switch to Offline Mode

    ~21s
If you want to make sure Spotify only uses downloaded content (no streaming), go to SettingsPlayback → turn on "Offline Mode." This stops Spotify from trying to stream anything and only shows your downloaded content.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Turn on Offline Mode before you board a flight so you do not accidentally try to stream when you land with no signal.

    5

    Manage your downloads

    ~15s
To see all your downloaded content in one place, go to "Your Library" → tap "Downloaded" at the top to filter by what is saved offline. To remove a download, tap the playlist or album → toggle the download switch OFF.

Spotify Premium includes the ability to download music, podcasts, and audiobooks to your phone so you can listen without an internet connection. This is one of the main advantages of Spotify Premium over the free plan.

Offline listening is great for road trips, flights, working out in a gym with poor signal, or simply saving your mobile data for other things. Downloaded content plays from your device's storage — no streaming required.

To use offline downloads, you need a Spotify Premium subscription ($11.99/month for individual). The free Spotify tier does not include offline listening.

You can download playlists, albums, and podcasts — but not individual songs (you have to download the entire playlist or album they belong to). Spotify allows up to 10,000 songs downloaded across up to 5 devices.

Downloaded content requires you to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to verify your subscription. This is just a quick automatic check — you do not need to actively do anything.
