    Download Star Walk 2 and grant permissions

    Search for "Star Walk 2" in the App Store or Google Play and download it. When the app opens, it will request access to your location and camera. Both permissions are needed — location so the app knows which part of the sky to show you, and camera for the augmented reality overlay. Tap "Allow" for both. Without these permissions, the core features of the app will not work.

    Switch between sky map and camera modes

    Star Walk 2 starts in "Sky Map" mode, which shows a simulated view of the sky you can scroll around by tilting your phone. To switch to augmented reality mode — where labels appear over the live camera feed — tap the camera icon in the top right corner. In AR mode, point your phone at any part of the real sky (outdoors at night) and star names, constellation lines, and planet labels will appear over what the camera sees.

    Quick Tip: AR mode works best on a clear, dark night away from bright city lights. In heavily lit areas, the camera cannot see enough stars to display meaningful labels over them.

    Identify a specific object

    To look up a planet, star, or constellation by name, tap the magnifying glass (search) icon. Type the name — "Mars," "Orion," or "Sirius" — and the app shows you its current position and how to find it tonight. An arrow guides you toward it if it is above the horizon. Information panels for each object include the distance, size, and rise and set times for your location.

    Check tonight's highlights

    Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and look for "Tonight's Sky" or "What's visible tonight." This screen lists the most interesting objects above the horizon for your location on the current evening, with brief descriptions. It is a good starting point if you are new to stargazing and want to know what to look for without having prior knowledge of the sky.

    Quick Tip: The International Space Station is often visible to the naked eye as a fast-moving bright dot. Star Walk 2 tracks its real-time position and can notify you when it will pass over your location.
