    1

    Download and open TikTok

    ~20s
On iPhone, open the App Store and search for "TikTok." On Android, open the Google Play Store and search for "TikTok." Tap "Get" or "Install" and wait for it to download. Open the app. You will be shown videos right away even before making an account — you can browse first and decide later if you want to sign up.
    2

Watch videos on the For You Page

    ~34s
When TikTok opens, you will see a video playing automatically. Swipe up to go to the next video — like turning pages in a book, but upward. Swipe down to go back to a previous video. Each video has buttons on the right side: a heart (Like), a speech bubble (Comments), an arrow (Share), and a spinning record (follow the creator). You do not have to tap anything — you can swipe and watch without tapping a thing.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The longer you watch a video, the more TikTok learns you enjoy that type of content and will show you more like it.

    3

    Search for topics you enjoy

    ~23s
Tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen to open the Search page. Type in a topic you enjoy — for example, "gardening tips" or "quick recipes" or "classic rock." TikTok will show you a list of popular videos and creators on that topic. Tap any video to watch it. This is a fast way to find content that interests you right from the start.
    4

    Follow a creator

    ~23s
When you find a creator whose videos you enjoy, tap their profile picture or username to open their page. You will see all the videos they have posted. Tap the red "Follow" button to follow them. Once you follow someone, their new videos will appear in a section called "Following" — tap the word "Following" at the top of the main screen to see only videos from people you follow.
    5

Save a video to watch later

    ~31s
If you see a video you want to come back to, tap the Bookmark icon (it looks like a flag) on the right side of the screen, or tap the Share arrow and choose "Save to Favorites." To find your saved videos later, tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner, then tap the Bookmark icon on your profile page.

    Warning

TikTok is designed to keep you watching — it is designed to keep you engaged and time can pass quickly. Setting a screen time limit in your phone's settings can help you stay in control.

TikTok is a free app where people share short videos — anywhere from 15 seconds to 10 minutes long. The videos cover almost every topic imaginable: cooking, gardening, music, comedy, travel, health tips, news, and much more. You do not have to make videos yourself to enjoy TikTok — millions of people use it purely to watch.

The heart of TikTok is a feature called the "For You Page" (sometimes written as FYP). When you open the app, this page shows you a continuous feed of videos that TikTok thinks you will enjoy, based on what you watch and interact with. The more you use the app, the better TikTok gets at showing you things you actually like.

TikTok is free to download on both iPhones and Android phones. You do not even need an account to watch videos — though having one lets you follow your favorite creators and save videos for later.

Some people worry about TikTok because it is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance, and there have been ongoing policy discussions in the US about privacy. As of 2026, TikTok is still available in the US app stores. You can use TikTok with privacy in mind by limiting what personal information you share in your profile.

This guide focuses on watching and enjoying TikTok as a viewer — not on making your own videos.
