TSA PreCheck and Global Entry Explained

Skip long airport security lines and breeze through customs with these trusted traveler programs.

    1

    TSA PreCheck basics

    ~15s
TSA PreCheck lets you use a faster security line at 200+ airports. Keep shoes, belts, and jackets on. Leave laptops and liquids in your bag. Costs $78 for 5 years ($15.60/year).
    2

    Global Entry basics

    ~15s
Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck PLUS expedited customs when returning to the US from international travel. Use automated kiosks instead of waiting in long customs lines. Costs $100 for 5 years.
    3

    How to apply

    ~15s
Visit ttp.cbp.dhs.gov. Create an account and fill out the application. Pay the fee. Wait for conditional approval (usually 2-3 weeks). Then schedule an in-person interview at an enrollment center.
    4

    The interview

    ~15s
Bring your passport and one other ID. The interview is brief (5-10 minutes) — they verify your identity and take fingerprints. Most people are approved on the spot.
    5

    Credit card reimbursement

    ~15s
Many credit cards reimburse the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee. Check if your card offers this before paying out of pocket. Popular cards: Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, Capital One Venture.
    6

Add it to your boarding pass

    ~15s
After approval, add your Known Traveler Number (KTN) to your airline profiles and booking confirmations. "TSA PRE" appears on your boarding pass automatically.
