Turo is a car-sharing service that works similarly to Airbnb, but for vehicles. Instead of renting from a corporate fleet at an airport counter, you rent a car directly from an individual owner. The car might be parked near your destination, delivered to you, or picked up from the owner's home. Prices are often lower than traditional rental agencies, especially for longer trips, and the selection includes everything from budget economy cars to trucks to luxury vehicles.
To get started, download the Turo app or visit turo.com. Create a free account with your email address. Before you can book a car, you'll need to upload a photo of your valid driver's license — Turo reviews it to confirm you're eligible to rent. The approval process usually takes a few minutes to a few hours.
Once approved, search by city, address, or airport and enter your rental dates. You can filter results by vehicle type, price range, car features, and whether the host offers delivery. Each listing shows the daily price, the host's rating and number of past trips, and photos of the actual car. Read the host's description carefully — some cars have mileage limits per day, pet policies, or other conditions.
When you find a vehicle you like, tap Book. You'll choose a protection plan — Turo offers several levels of coverage for liability and physical damage to the car, ranging from basic to premium. Read these options carefully so you understand what's covered if something goes wrong. Your personal auto insurance and credit card may also provide some coverage — check before you book.
After booking, the host will send pickup instructions. Many pickups are handled via keypad lock boxes or contactless. Before driving away, walk around the car and photograph any existing scratches, dents, or damage with your phone's camera. Share these photos with the host through the app to document the car's condition before you start your trip.
At the end of your rental, return the car to the agreed location with at least the same fuel level it had when you picked it up — Turo charges a refueling fee if it's returned on empty. Leave an honest review of the car and host so future renters know what to expect.
Turo differs from traditional rental companies in one important way: if you have a problem during the trip, there's no 24-hour service desk. You'll contact Turo's customer support team and potentially the host directly. For that reason, Turo works best for straightforward trips where you're comfortable with some self-service.
