WiFi vs Cellular Data: What Is the Difference?

Two ways your phone connects to the internet — here is when to use each one.

    1

    What is WiFi

    ~15s
WiFi is a wireless internet connection from a router in your home, office, or public place. It has a limited range — about 100-150 feet. WiFi is typically faster and does not count against your phone plan data limit.

    What is cellular data

    ~15s
Cellular data (4G/5G) connects your phone through cell towers. It works almost anywhere you have phone signal. Cellular data counts against your monthly data plan unless you have unlimited data.
    3

    When to use each

    ~15s
Use WiFi at home, work, or places with free WiFi. Use cellular data when on the go. Download large files and stream video on WiFi to avoid data charges.

How to check which you are using

    ~15s
Look at the top of your phone. A WiFi icon (curved lines) means WiFi. "4G," "5G," or "LTE" means cellular data. Your phone switches automatically when WiFi is unavailable.
