AirDrop is Apple's built-in wireless file transfer feature. It lets you send photos, documents, videos, web links, and other files between your Mac and iPhone (or between any Apple devices) without cables, email, or cloud storage. Files transfer directly between devices using a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the transfer is fast — even large files take only a few seconds.
To use AirDrop, both devices need to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on (they do not need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network — AirDrop creates its own direct connection). On your iPhone, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner and make sure both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons are blue (turned on). On your Mac, click the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons in the menu bar to confirm they are on.
To send a file from your iPhone to your Mac: Open the file you want to share (a photo, document, or web page). Tap the Share button (the square with an upward arrow). Look for AirDrop in the sharing options and tap it. Your Mac should appear as an available device — tap its icon. On your Mac, you will see a notification asking you to accept the file. Click "Accept" and the file will transfer immediately. Photos go to your Downloads folder by default.
To send a file from your Mac to your iPhone: Find the file in Finder, right-click it, and select "Share" then "AirDrop." Your iPhone should appear as an available device in the AirDrop window. Click your iPhone's icon. On your iPhone, you will see a notification asking you to accept the file. Tap "Accept" and the file will open in the appropriate app.
If the other device does not appear in AirDrop, check the receiving device's AirDrop settings. On iPhone, go to Settings then General then AirDrop, and make sure it is set to "Everyone for 10 Minutes" or "Contacts Only" (if the sender is in your contacts). On Mac, open Finder, click "AirDrop" in the sidebar, and set the receiving option to "Everyone" or "Contacts Only."
AirDrop is one of the best reasons to use Apple devices together. It is faster and more convenient than emailing files to yourself, and it works without an internet connection. Use it to transfer vacation photos from your iPhone to your Mac, send documents from your Mac to your iPhone for reading on the go, or share web links between devices.
