How to Use the Kindle App to Read Books on Any Device

Read Kindle books on your phone, tablet, or computer using the free Kindle app — no Kindle device required, and thousands of classics are free.

    1

    Download the Kindle app

    ~15s
Search for "Kindle" in the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play Store (Android). On a Windows or Mac computer, go to amazon.com/kindle-dbs/fd/kcp to download the desktop app. The app is free.
    2

Sign in with your Amazon account

    ~15s
Open the Kindle app and sign in with your Amazon account email and password. If you do not have an Amazon account, tap "Create a new Amazon account" — it is free to create.
    3

    Find free books

    ~17s
In the Kindle app, tap "Get Books" or open Amazon's website and go to the Kindle store. Search for a title or browse the "Free" section. Many classic books are listed at $0.00. Tap "Buy now with 1-Click" (even if it's free, the button says this) to add it to your library.
    4

    Open and read your book

    ~15s
Tap the "Library" tab in the Kindle app to see all your books. Tap any book cover to open it. The book will download to your device — after that, you can read it without an internet connection.
    5

    Customize your reading experience

    ~16s
While reading, tap the middle of the screen to see the toolbar. Tap the "Aa" icon to open reading settings. Increase the font size, choose a font style like "Bookerly" (designed for screen reading), and try the Sepia background if the white page feels too bright.

The Kindle app is a free reading app from Amazon that turns any phone, tablet, or computer into a digital book reader. You do not need to own a Kindle e-reader device to buy and read Kindle books — the free app works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows computers, and Macs. Once you buy or download a book, it syncs across all your devices so you can start reading on your phone and continue on your tablet right where you left off.

Amazon's Kindle store has thousands of completely free books — including many classic novels by authors like Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Mark Twain. You can also find free public-domain books at Project Gutenberg (gutenberg.org), which can be downloaded and sent to your Kindle library.

The Kindle app has excellent reading customization options: you can increase the font size, change the font style, switch between a white page, sepia (tan) background, or black page with white text, and adjust the screen brightness independently of your device settings.
