Uber and Lyft are ride-hailing apps that let you request a car and driver to take you somewhere — like a taxi, but you request and pay for it through your phone. Both apps work very similarly, so once you know one, you know the other.

To get started, download the Uber or Lyft app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). Create an account with your name, phone number, and email address. You will also need to add a payment method: a credit card, debit card, or connect a service like PayPal or Apple Pay. The app charges automatically — you never need cash.

When you open the app, it uses your phone's location to know where you are. Type where you want to go in the "Where to?" field. The app shows you ride options with estimated prices and arrival times. Common options include: standard rides (UberX or Lyft), shared rides (cheaper but you may share with other passengers), and larger vehicles (UberXL or Lyft XL for groups).

Tap the ride type you want and then tap "Request" or "Confirm." The app matches you with a nearby driver and shows their name, photo, car make, model, color, and license plate number. You will see their estimated arrival time on the map.

When the driver is close, go outside to your pickup location. Verify the car matches what the app shows — check the license plate number. Many riders also confirm by asking the driver "Who are you here for?" to make sure they get in the right car.

During the ride, the app shows your route in real time. You can share your trip status with a friend or family member using the "Share trip" feature — they can follow your ride live on a map.

When you arrive, you do not need to do anything — the fare is charged to your payment method automatically. After the trip, the app asks you to rate your driver (1 to 5 stars) and leave an optional tip.
