Voice typing (also called dictation) lets you talk instead of type. Your phone or computer converts your spoken words into text in real time. It works in text messages, emails, search bars, notes apps, documents — anywhere you would normally type.
Voice typing has gotten remarkably accurate in recent years, and it is built into every modern device. It is faster than typing for many people, and it is a great accessibility feature for anyone with difficulty using a keyboard.
On iPhone: whenever the keyboard is showing, look for the microphone icon at the bottom of the keyboard (near the space bar). Tap it. Start speaking, and your words appear as text. Speak punctuation out loud: say "period," "comma," "question mark," "exclamation point," or "new line" and the phone types those characters. Tap the microphone icon again to stop dictation.
On Android: when the keyboard is showing, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard (usually at the top-right or near the space bar). If you use Gboard (Google's keyboard), you can also press and hold the space bar to activate voice typing. Start speaking. Say punctuation aloud. Tap the microphone again to stop.
On Windows: Press Windows key + H to start voice typing. A toolbar appears. Start speaking. Say punctuation aloud. Press Windows + H again to stop. This works in any text field.
On Mac: Go to System Settings then Keyboard then Dictation and turn it on. Press the fn (function) key twice to start dictation. Start speaking. Press fn twice again to stop.
Tips for better accuracy: speak clearly and at a natural pace. Minimize background noise. If the app gets a word wrong, you can go back and correct it manually. You can mix voice typing and keyboard typing in the same message.
Voice typing also works great for quick searches: tap the search bar, tap the microphone, and say what you are looking for.
