Video Calling Mastery: FaceTime, Zoom & Google Meet

Master video calls to stay connected with family and friends — set up FaceTime, Zoom, and Google Meet with confidence.

    1

    Choosing the right app

    ~30s
There are three main free video calling apps: FaceTime (built into iPhone, iPad, and Mac — only works between Apple devices), Zoom (works on any device — great for groups and meetings), and Google Meet (works on any device — integrated with Gmail). If you mostly call family on iPhones, FaceTime is the easiest. If you call a mix of Android and iPhone users, use Zoom or Google Meet.

    Quick Tip

All three apps are free for one-to-one calls and for groups. Zoom has a 40-minute limit on free group calls — individual calls are unlimited.

    2

    Making a FaceTime call (iPhone/iPad)

    ~23s
Open the FaceTime app (green icon). Tap the + (New FaceTime) button. Type the name, phone number, or email of the person you want to call — they must also have an Apple device. Tap the green camera icon to start a video call. The call connects automatically if they answer.

    Quick Tip

To call from your Contacts app: open Contacts, find the person, scroll down, and tap the FaceTime button.

    3

    Setting up Zoom

    ~35s
Download Zoom from the App Store (iPhone/iPad), Play Store (Android), or zoom.us (computer). Open Zoom and tap "Sign Up Free" to create an account with your email. Once logged in, tap "New Meeting" to start a call immediately, or "Join" to enter a meeting code someone sent you. To invite family, tap "Participants" during a call → "Invite" → share a link via WhatsApp or email.

    Quick Tip

Ask a family member to send you a Zoom invite link. Just tapping the link joins the call automatically — you don't need to know your own Zoom details.

    Warning

Never share your Zoom personal meeting ID publicly — only share it with people you want to join.

    4

    Using Google Meet

    ~23s
If you have a Gmail account, you already have Google Meet. On a phone, download the Google Meet app. On a computer, go to meet.google.com. Click "New Meeting" to start a call and share the link with others. To join someone else's call, click the link they sent you — it opens Meet automatically.

    Quick Tip

Google Meet works beautifully on a Chromebook or any computer with a Google account — nothing to install.

    5

During the call — controls to know

    ~26s
All three apps have the same basic controls at the bottom of the screen: a microphone button (tap to mute/unmute yourself), a camera button (tap to turn your camera off/on), and a red phone button to end the call. If people say they can't hear you, tap the microphone icon — you're probably muted.

    Warning

If you can't hear the other person, first check your phone's volume buttons (on the side). If using headphones, make sure they're properly plugged in.

    Tips for a better call

    ~30s
Face a window or lamp so your face is well-lit (don't sit with bright light behind you — this makes you look like a silhouette). Hold your phone or tablet at eye level — propping it on a stack of books works well. Stay within arm's reach of your Wi-Fi router for the best connection. For group calls with grandchildren, a tablet on a stand is much easier than holding a phone.

    Quick Tip

If the connection is choppy, close other apps running in the background and move closer to your Wi-Fi router.
