Windows 11 includes a productivity feature called Focus Sessions, built directly into the Clock app. It's designed to help you concentrate on a task by setting a dedicated work timer — during that time, it can silence notifications, mute your Microsoft Teams status, and integrate with Spotify to play focus music.
Focus Sessions uses a technique called the Pomodoro Technique — working in focused intervals (typically 25 minutes) followed by short breaks (5 minutes). Research has shown that structured work intervals with regular breaks can improve concentration and reduce mental fatigue compared to trying to work for hours without stopping.
You don't need to follow the Pomodoro method strictly — you can set any session length from 5 minutes to 4 hours. The idea is to decide on a specific task, set a timer, and commit to working on only that task until the timer ends. Interruptions are minimized because notifications are silenced.
During a Focus Session, Windows can do several things automatically: turn on Do Not Disturb (silencing all notifications), set your Microsoft Teams or Skype status to "Focusing," and play a timer sound. After the session ends, a short break timer starts automatically if you've enabled it.
The feature also integrates with Microsoft To Do (a free task management app) — you can see your tasks in the Focus Sessions interface and mark them complete without switching apps.
Focus Sessions is particularly helpful if you work from home and get easily pulled away by notifications, emails, or social media, or if you're working on a complex project that requires sustained attention.
