How to Check Your Windows Updates Are Up to Date

1. Step 1. Understand why updates matter

   Windows updates fix security holes that hackers could use to break into your computer. They also fix problems (bugs) and can make your computer run better. Keeping Windows updated is one of the most important things you can do to stay safe online.

   Think of updates like changing the locks on your front door. They keep the bad guys out by fixing weaknesses before anyone can take advantage of them.

2. Step 2. Check for updates now

   Click the Start button (the Windows icon in the bottom left corner). Click the gear-shaped Settings icon. Click "Windows Update" in the left-hand menu. Then click the "Check for updates" button. Windows will search for any new updates that are available for your computer.

3. Step 3. Download and install the updates

   If Windows finds any updates, you will see a "Download & install" button — click it. Some smaller updates install in the background while you keep working. Larger updates will ask you to restart your computer. When you see the restart prompt, save any open work and let the computer restart. Do not skip the restart — the update will not finish until you do.

   Warning

   Do not turn off or unplug your computer while updates are installing. Let the process finish completely, even if it takes a few minutes.

4. Step 4. Turn on automatic updates

   To make sure you never miss an important update, go to Windows Update settings and click "Advanced options." Make sure "Receive updates for other Microsoft products" is turned on. Under "Active hours," set the times when you normally use your computer — Windows will schedule restarts outside of those times so it does not interrupt you. Windows Update also installs updates for your printer, graphics card, and other hardware automatically.

5. Step 5. Know how long updates take

   Regular monthly updates usually take between 5 and 15 minutes. Bigger feature updates (which come about twice a year) can take 30 to 60 minutes. It is best to start a big update when you will not need your computer for a while — before lunch, before bed, or when you step away for an errand.

   You can keep using your computer while updates download. The restart is the only part that interrupts your work.
