Microsoft Word Basics for Complete Beginners

Learn to create, format, save, and print documents in Microsoft Word.

    1

    Create a new document

    ~15s
Open Word. Click File > New. Choose Blank Document for a fresh start, or pick a template (resume, letter, report) with pre-designed formatting — just add your text.
    2

    Type and format text

    ~15s
Click anywhere and start typing. Select text to format it: Bold (Ctrl+B), Italic (Ctrl+I), change font size, or change the font style from the Home tab toolbar.
    3

    Use styles for headings

    ~15s
Instead of manually making text bigger for headings, use Styles on the Home tab. Click "Heading 1" for main titles, "Heading 2" for subtitles. This keeps your document professional and organized.
    4

    Add images

    ~15s
Click Insert > Pictures to add a photo from your computer. Click Insert > Online Pictures to search for images. Drag the corners to resize. Click the image for layout options.
    5

    Save your document

    ~15s
Press Ctrl+S or click File > Save As. Choose where to save (your computer or OneDrive for cloud access). Word saves as .docx by default.
    6

    Print your document

    ~15s
Press Ctrl+P to open print preview. Check how it looks. Choose your printer, number of copies, and page range. Click Print.
    7

    Read Mode

    ~15s
Click View > Read Mode for distraction-free reading. Navigate with page arrows or swipe on a touchscreen. Great for reviewing long documents.
