    Download the XE Currency app

    ~19s
Search for "XE Currency" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and install the free app. You do not need to create an account to use the basic currency conversion features. Open the app and it will load the latest exchange rates automatically as long as you have a Wi-Fi or data connection.
    2

    Convert between two currencies

    ~30s
On the main screen, you will see two currency fields. Tap the top field and select "USD" (US Dollar) or whichever currency you are starting with. Tap the bottom field and select the currency of your destination country — for example, "EUR" for euros or "MXN" for Mexican pesos. Type in an amount, and XE will show the converted value instantly using the live mid-market rate.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can add multiple currencies to your list for trips with multiple stops. Tap "Add Currency" to build a custom list of the currencies you need.

    3

    Understand the mid-market rate

    ~29s
The rate XE shows is the mid-market rate — the true currency value before any fees are added. When you exchange money at a bank, currency booth, or ATM abroad, the actual rate you receive will be slightly less favorable because those providers add a fee or margin. Use XE as a baseline to compare and evaluate the rates you are offered.

    Warning

Airport currency exchange booths typically offer the worst rates. Using a bank ATM at your destination is usually much closer to the mid-market rate, though ATM fees may apply.

    4

    Set a rate alert

    ~22s
In the XE app, tap the alert icon or go to the "Alerts" section (you may need to create a free XE account to access this feature). Choose a currency pair, set a target rate, and XE will send you a push notification when that rate is reached. This is helpful if you want to exchange a large amount of money and are waiting for a favorable rate.
    5

Use XE offline during your trip

    ~24s
Before departing for a destination with limited data access, open the XE app and load the exchange rates. The app caches recently viewed rates so you can still convert prices while offline. Tap the rates you need in advance, and they will be available even without an internet connection during your trip.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Update your rates in XE every few days during a long trip, as exchange rates shift over time.

XE Currency is a free app and website that shows you live exchange rates for more than 180 currencies around the world. Before and during international travel, it helps you understand exactly how much your dollars are worth in another country — so you can make informed decisions about when and where to exchange money, and avoid getting taken advantage of by unfavorable rates.

The exchange rates shown in XE reflect the mid-market rate, which is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices used in international currency markets. Banks, airport currency exchange booths, and credit card companies all add a margin on top of this mid-market rate, which is how they make money. Knowing the mid-market rate gives you a benchmark to compare against what you are actually being offered.

For example, if XE shows $1 equals 1.08 euros, and the airport currency booth offers $1 equals 0.95 euros, you know you are losing about 12 percent to fees and unfavorable rates. This awareness can save you real money over the course of a trip.

XE also lets you set rate alerts. You can tell the app to notify you when a particular currency pair reaches a target rate — useful if you are planning a trip a few months out and want to exchange money when the rate is favorable.

The app works offline once you have loaded rate data. This means you can convert prices while walking around a market or store abroad, even without a data connection.
