Download the Amwell app and create an account

    ~31s
Search for "Amwell" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Tap "Sign Up" on the home screen and enter your name, date of birth, email, and a password. If your employer or insurance company gave you a service key or member code, enter it at this step to unlock your covered benefits.

    Quick Tip

Check with your employer's HR department or your insurance card's website to see if Amwell is included in your benefits — many people have access to Amwell visits at no cost through their employer without realizing it.

    2

Enter your insurance and health information

    ~18s
After account creation, tap "Insurance" and enter your insurance plan details. Amwell will verify your coverage and display your estimated cost for different visit types. Then complete your health profile — enter any current medications, known allergies, and past medical conditions. This information is seen by the doctor before your visit begins.
    3

    Choose on-demand or scheduled

    ~30s
From the home screen, tap "See a Doctor" to connect right away with the next available provider. If you prefer a specific time, tap "Schedule" and browse available appointment slots. Select the type of care you need — Urgent Care, Primary Care, Therapy, or another specialty — and choose a provider from the list, where you can read brief bios and ratings before selecting.

    Quick Tip

If you have a preferred provider you have seen before on Amwell, you can search for them by name in the Schedule section to book with the same doctor.

    4

    Start your video visit

    ~30s
At your appointment time, or when the on-demand doctor is ready, tap the notification in the app and then tap "Start Visit." Allow camera and microphone access when prompted. Speak clearly and hold the phone at face level. The doctor can see and hear you well at a normal talking volume. There is no need to shout or hold the phone unnaturally close to your face.

    Warning

Position yourself in a well-lit room with your face clearly visible. Poor lighting makes it harder for the doctor to visually assess you and can slow down the visit.

    5

Receive your care summary and prescription

    ~17s
After the visit ends, Amwell will send a care summary to your account with the doctor's notes, diagnosis, and any prescriptions. Prescriptions are sent electronically to the pharmacy you selected. You can view the full visit summary anytime by logging into the app and tapping "Visit History."

Amwell is a telehealth platform that connects you with licensed healthcare providers over video. You can use it for urgent but non-emergency issues, primary care visits, mental health support, nutrition counseling, and even some specialist visits, all from your phone, tablet, or computer, without leaving home.

What sets Amwell apart from other telehealth services is the option to book ahead. Many telehealth platforms only offer on-demand visits, where you wait for the next open doctor. Amwell gives you both choices: connect right away if something comes up, or schedule a time that fits your routine, just like a regular doctor's appointment.

Amwell works with many major health insurance plans, including Medicare Advantage. If your plan covers telehealth, your Amwell visits may cost little or nothing out of pocket. If you're uninsured or out-of-network, Amwell shows flat fees upfront, so you know the cost before you start.

The platform works on basic smartphones. The video doesn't need a fast connection or a new device. Amwell's app has a simple layout with large buttons, made for people who aren't comfortable with complicated technology.

Amwell works well for things like cold and flu symptoms, sinus problems, rashes, back and joint pain, anxiety, depression, and follow-up visits after a hospital stay. Doctors on Amwell can write prescriptions that go straight to your pharmacy.
