Spotify for Podcasters (formerly Anchor) lets you record episodes on your phone, add music, and distribute your show to every major platform at no cost.

    1

Create your Spotify for Podcasters account

    ~37s
Go to podcasters.spotify.com and click "Get started for free." You can sign in with an existing Spotify account or create a new one with your email address. If you already use Spotify for music, use the same account — your podcast dashboard will be part of the same profile. After logging in, the platform asks for some basic information about your podcast: its name, language, and category. Choose a category that best matches your topic, such as Society & Culture, Education, or True Crime.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Take a few minutes to think about your podcast name before you create the account. Changing it later is possible but can confuse listeners who have already subscribed.

    2

    Record your first episode

    ~38s
In the Spotify for Podcasters dashboard, click "New Episode" or tap the microphone button in the app. The recording screen appears with a large red button. Before you press it, find a quiet spot — a small room like a closet or bedroom with soft surfaces (carpet, curtains, upholstered furniture) absorbs echo and background noise. Tap the red button to start recording. Speak at a normal conversational volume, holding your phone about six to eight inches from your mouth. Tap the stop button when you are done.

    Warning

Avoid recording near windows facing busy streets, next to running appliances like dishwashers or refrigerators, or with a fan blowing nearby. These sounds are picked up clearly by microphones and are distracting to listeners.

    3

    Edit and add music

    ~28s
After recording, you can trim the start and end of your segment by dragging the handles at either side of the audio clip. To add background music, tap the music note icon and browse the licensed music library — all of these tracks are cleared for podcast use, so you will not have copyright issues. Keep any background music at a low volume so it does not compete with your voice. The platform shows a visual preview of how the music overlays with your voice track.
    4

Fill in your episode details and publish

    ~34s
Give your episode a title and write a description. The description appears in podcast apps below the episode listing, so include enough detail to tell potential listeners what the episode is about. Once everything looks right, click or tap "Publish Now." Spotify for Podcasters distributes your episode to connected platforms within a few hours. Your first episode on Apple Podcasts may take up to 24 hours because Apple reviews new shows before listing them.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Write a description of at least two to three sentences. Many people decide whether to listen based on the description alone, especially when they are browsing unfamiliar shows.

    5

Track your audience and grow your show

    ~26s
The Spotify for Podcasters dashboard shows you how many times each episode has been played, where listeners are located, and how much of each episode the average listener hears before stopping. A "completion rate" above 70% means your content is holding attention well. Use these numbers to understand which episodes resonated and apply those lessons to future recordings. Publishing on a consistent schedule — weekly or biweekly — helps listeners develop the habit of tuning in.

Spotify for Podcasters — previously called Anchor — is the simplest way to start a podcast. The platform is completely free, handles all the technical distribution automatically, and lets you record episodes directly from your phone or computer without any special equipment. When you publish an episode, Spotify for Podcasters sends it to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts, and many other platforms at the same time.

This makes it a great starting point for anyone who wants to share their voice — whether that is a personal story, a hobby discussion, an interview show, or educational content. You do not need a studio, a fancy microphone, or knowledge of audio engineering to publish your first episode.

The app records audio using your phone's built-in microphone. A quiet room and speaking close to your phone produces audio that is clear enough for most podcast listeners. If you want better sound quality as your show grows, an inexpensive USB microphone can make a significant difference, but it is not required to get started.

Spotify for Podcasters also includes a basic editor. You can trim the beginning and end of segments, rearrange sections, and add background music from a licensed library. More advanced editing — like removing mistakes from the middle of a recording — works better in a separate tool like Audacity, but many podcasters find the built-in editing sufficient for casual shows.

Your podcast gets its own RSS feed, which is a standard format that podcast apps use to find and deliver new episodes to listeners. This means your show works on any podcast app, not only Spotify. Get started at podcasters.spotify.com or download the app on iPhone or Android.
